The trees are identified that need to be taken down and they are cut into  6'-8' logs. The logs are then cut into "blanks" - the length is about the same as the diameter of the log.  The blank is sealed to help prevent checking and cracking.  When a bowl is to be made, a log is selected and then cut in half using a chain saw.  This makes 2 "bowl blanks". The corners are knocked off to make the initial turning and rounding easier.  This can be done with the chainsaw or on a band saw.  The "bowl blank" is mounted on the lathe and finally a bowl emerges.  The bowl is finished with a food grade finish and is now ready for the table.
